WOMEN’S INDUSTRY NETWORK SEAFOOD COMMUNITY

THE ORGANISATION:

Although both men and women participate in the seafood industry, there is the strong community perception that the industry consists of ‘blokes in boats’.

Women are generally not given due recognition for their significant contribution to the industry and few women are represented in senior management or decision making roles.

Changing this public perception about the seafood industry requires a broad strategy aimed at all levels of the community and well crafted resources to enable delivery of the required information. The Women’s Industry Network Seafood Community (WINSC) is the vehicle required to move public sentiment.

WINSC is a not-for-profit, independent, productive network for women associated with the commercial sector of the fishing industry. It is also the only national organisation in Australia that strives to represent all women of the seafood industry.

It consists of members from all levels of the fishing industry; from small family run fishing businesses to large private companies dealing on the international market, research and policy makers.

The WINSC mission is to support the Australian seafood industry by developing, capitalising on and promoting the strengths of women. It has a strong focus on women working in regional and remote Australia.

WINSC is managed by an executive committee and controlled by a national board of directors. Through the provision of a newsletter and e-mail links, the group provides support, encouragement and the dissemination of information to members. An annual conference is also staged, providing personal and professional development opportunities.

It began in 1998 in South Australia and continues to grow from strength to strength, now enjoying national status and strong partnerships with industry.

Some of its constitutional objectives include:

        • Recognise and enhance the skills of seafood women;
        • Develop effective partnerships with government agencies and other industry stakeholders;
        • Take a professional approach to all activities and relationships with other stakeholders;
        • Create a supportive environment to ensure women of the fishing industry reach their potential;
        • Actively encourage the involvement of seafood women;
        • Provide community education on all aspects of the seafood industry; and
        • Create a positive image of the seafood industry though the promotion of the benefits of the industry to the community.

      MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

      WINSC fulfils many important functions for its members, as well as networking. It strives to provide a unique position of business from a caring, societal point of view. It recognises its potential to influence how things are done and how the industry is perceived.

      National newsletters are produced for members to read and to contribute to. They offer an opportunity to read what other fisher folk are doing, how they are coping with problems facing the industry and an opportunity to share their strengths and solutions.

      Annual membership of WINSC costs just $55 per annum. In return, members receive the newsletter, are invited to participate in State based activities and training programs and have the opportunity to attend the national conference at a reduce rate.

      For further information on WINSC membership, contact your State representative for a membership form.
