      MEDIA RELEASE

      Southport jetty repairs underway

The Tasmanian Fishing Industry Council (TFlC) gratefully acknowledges the increased level of funding approved by Minister Paul Lennon to enable the Southport jetty to be upgraded to an acceptable operational standard and within the same configuration the Chief Executive of TFIC Bob Lister said today.

Bob Lister also said "Southport is becoming an increasingly important region for the provisioning and servicing of commercial fishing vessels and for unloading of abalone, rock lobster and scalefish. It is a vital facility in the area which needs to be retained and property maintained".

"After many months of lobbying and negotiations by Tasmania's peak fishing industry body the allocation of $130,000 and a commitment to complete the pile replacement work and decking repairs by the end of September is warmly welcomed by Tasmania's commercial fishing industry".

      Bob Lister can be contacted on 03 6224 2332 or 0408 146 960.
